Cornwall has a habit of stealing hearts. Between the dramatic coastline and that soft golden light you only seem to get down in the South West, it’s no wonder so many couples choose it as their wedding backdrop. But while the clifftop views get all the attention, there’s another side to Cornwall that’s just as magical: the hidden countryside venues tucked away in peaceful green pockets – far from the busy beaches.
That was exactly the vibe for Megan and James, who tied the knot at Chycara House on the 23rd of May. It’s one of those venues that doesn’t need to shout about itself. Set in 14 acres of the Bissoe Valley, it has this gentle, unhurried atmosphere that seems to slow everyone down the moment they arrive.
Hog Roast Truro has been working with Chycara for a good while now, so when Megan and James came to us for their May wedding – 90 guests, one big celebration – it felt like familiar territory in the best possible way. They’d chosen a customised version of our Alfresco Menu, which gave us a nice bit of creative room to work with.
We started with canapés during the arrival drinks, because nothing signals that a wedding is going to be a good one quite like being handed something delicious the second you walk in. The spread included pan-seared beef fillet, chicken liver parfait, roasted halloumi and tomato crostini, duck wraps and spring rolls. Small plates, big flavours – guests were already asking questions about the main before they’d finished their welcome drink.

For the main, the hog roast came out as a buffet with all the proper accompaniments – sage and onion stuffing, crackling, applesauce, roasted new potatoes, coleslaw, seasonal leaves and a heritage tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad that was genuinely as good as it sounds. Hog Roast Truro’s meat-free option was grilled vegetable kebabs with halloumi, which went down just as well.
Then dessert rolled around and any pretence of restraint went straight out the window. Profiteroles and individual cheesecakes with fresh cream (both gone very quickly, no complaints filed).
It was a proper lovely day – the kind that reminds us as caterers why we got into this job in the first place.
