Catering for any occasion

Spitting Pig Mousehole has always been proud of its ability to cater for any occasion no matter the venue or the weather, but I have to admit that the beach party we catered for yesterday was one of our more difficult days. Now we’re used to some pretty good weather down in Mousehole, especially when compared to a lot of the country, but this summer has been a little dire. Nothing compares to the south downs’ coast when it’s sunny, but when the wind blows and there’s no sun, it can be a little intimidating.

I’m on the beach at 6am sharp setting up the gazebo and a hog roast Mousehole pig. Now if you’ve ever tried putting a tent up in a force 10 gale you will empathize with our predicament. I only had one of our junior chefs in attendance for this surfer’s jamboree, but I think we needed about 5 pairs of hands to do it without looking a little foolish. Luckily some of the surfers turned up early and we managed to secure the shelter in the most secluded spot we could find.

In retrospect it must have been quite a sight, as six guys worked on taming what must have looked like a mutant, runaway kit.

Whilst the gazebo may have been beyond the Spitting Piggers, setting up the roaster was as quick as usual. So whilst the surfers were enjoying themselves being half frozen to death, we had the meat cooking and warmed ourselves up with a well deserved cup of coffee. It wasn’t a particularly nice day to do any of this, but the half frozen surfers really appreciated the effort we put in and when the families turned up and a few fires were lit, the afternoon at least warmed up a little. A glass of ice cold lager and a bun crammed with juicy hog roast Mousehole and apple sauce seemed to have them all buzzing and that’s all we can ask for, as far as the catering goes. I just hope if they hire us again we have somewhere indoors to go as contingency!
